Balažka Massif and the Lookout Tower

The most beautiful view of the town of Lipany and its surroundings is from the lookout tower. The Balažka mountain massif (643 m above sea level) is a truly exceptional place. In the past, there was an old Jewish cemetery under the railway in the Balažka-Štrembroch part. The cemetery dated back to 1813 when the first Jewish settlers arrived there from Galicia, Poland. The cemetery was used until the end of the 19th century when it fell into disrepair. Now, only the information board remains. The massif is lined by a railway line which divided the rock in the eastern part into the so-called “Small Rock and Big Rock”. This created two tourist circuits. The Little Rock circuit offers beautiful views. There is a well, partisan trenches, a sitting area and information boards. The Big Rock circuit offers a route along the Balažka ridge. The both routes are interconnected and have several points of connection. In October 2019, the Balažka lookout tower was ceremoniously opened – it is 14 m high and offers beautiful view of Lipany and the surrounding hills.
